This ratchet pawl is a critical component of the recoil (pull-cord) starting system on Fits Briggs and Stratton (B&S) small gasoline engines. The pawl engages the starter mechanism with the engine flywheel when the pull cord is yanked; a worn or broken pawl causes the recoil starter to slip, making the engine difficult or impossible to start.
