This governor adjusting nut (also called a nut-gov adjusting) secures and positions the governor arm on the governor shaft of Fits Briggs & Fits Stratton (B&S) small engines. It is the critical fastener used during governor setup: loosening it allows the governor arm to be repositioned on the shaft, and tightening it locks the arm in place to maintain correct engine speed regulation. A worn, stripped, or missing governor adjusting nut can cause the engine to hunt, surge, over-rev, or fail to hold a steady governed RPM under load.
