What This Part Is
A 5/8 inch splined steering shaft for MTD-built lawn tractors. The sector gear teeth are formed on the lower end, so it drives the steering gear exactly like the factory shaft.
Part Numbers It Replaces
738-05078, 938-05078, and the current MTD number 738P07154. It also covers 738-07154 and 938-05078-CM. The older numbers and the current number are the same shaft.
When To Replace It
If the steering wheel turns freely but the front wheels lag or do not respond, the splines on the old shaft are worn or stripped. A new shaft brings back tight, direct steering.
How To Confirm Fit
MTD used this shaft across many lawn tractors branded MTD, Troy-Bilt, Craftsman, Yard-Man, and Yard Machines. Match the number stamped on your old shaft, or compare the 5/8 inch spline and the sector gear, before ordering.
Installation Notes
The shaft rides in the lower flange bearing 741-04124. Reuse the steering wheel, hex bushing, and existing hardware. Most owners complete the swap in about an hour.
