This recoil spring is a key component of the track adjuster and mechanical recoil system on Caterpillar excavators. It works in conjunction with the grease-filled adjustment cylinder to allow the front idler to move forward and back, maintaining proper track tension while absorbing undercarriage shock loads during heavy-duty operation.
