When it doesn't, productivity suffers—and if the problem is ignored, a minor issue can quickly turn into an expensive repair.
One of the biggest misconceptions about hydraulic problems is that they automatically mean the hydraulic pump has failed. In reality, the pump is only one piece of the system, and many loss-of-power issues are caused by problems elsewhere. Restrictive filters, leaking hoses, worn cylinders, contaminated oil, or even low fluid levels can all produce similar symptoms.

A Clogged Hydraulic Filter Can Starve the System

Small internal failures can restrict oil flow without creating an obvious external leak. Kinked hoses, collapsed inner liners, damaged fittings, or pinhole leaks all reduce hydraulic efficiency.
External hose damage is easier to spot. Look for:
- Cracked rubber
- Bulges
- Abrasion from rubbing against the frame
- Wet or oily fittings
- Rust around crimped ends
A slow leak doesn't just waste oil—it allows air into the system, reducing pressure and making hydraulic functions feel inconsistent.
If a hose shows significant wear, replacement is usually the safest and most economical option.
Air in the Hydraulic System
Hydraulic systems are designed to move oil—not air.
When air enters the system through a loose fitting, damaged hose, or after maintenance, performance changes almost immediately.
Operators often describe the symptoms as:
- Jerky loader movement
- Chattering cylinders
- Spongy hydraulic response
- Foamy hydraulic oil

In many cases, cycling hydraulic functions several times after repairs will purge trapped air, but recurring aeration usually indicates another issue that should be corrected.
